Food is one of the greatest economic strengths of the Netherlands. East Netherlands is the centre of 'Food Valley', a cluster of around 100 companies, centered around Wageningen. Together they employ about 10,000 people in food sciences, technological research and related businesses. It is a European leader in R&D and entrepreneurship in the agrifood sector and a powerhouse in food technology and development.

At the hub of Food Valley is Wageningen University and Research Centre, one of the most authoritative agrifood research institutes in Europe.
Public and private sectors also work closely together through the Wageningen Centre for Food Sciences, an innovative concept in which leading European food corporations such as Unilever, Royal DSM, FrieslandCampina, Cosun and Avebe share the responsibility for innovative research with public food laboratories.
There are a host of advanced research facilities and laboratories dedicated to pushing forward the boundaries of the agrifood industry.
