Dutch businesses are the "most ethical"

Transparency International has just published their Bribe Payers Index 2011. According to this research, which was conducting among 3,000 businesspeople in 28 countries, Dutch businesses are the most ethical.

"This is a good indication of the prominent role that Dutch businesses play in corporate social responsibility," says the Dutch employers organization VNO-NCW.

The question was asked to top managers as to how often companies, and from which countries, were guilty of paying bribes. The Netherlands was top of the list with a score of 8.8 (meaning the least frequently guilty of bribing practices), followed by Switzerland and Belgium.

The poorest scoring countries were Russia, China and Mexico. According to Transparency International, whose mission is fighting corruption, the behavior of business people in foreign countries is often reflected in their level of integrity in their home countries. Transparency International took this opportunity to call on Russia and China to urgently address their corruption practices. This is especially necessary considering their growing participation in global commerce and investment.

According to Transparency International, the practicing of bribing occurs most often in the public sector and in the construction industry.
