Reusing discarded textile waste as high-value products is currently not possible in the textile value chain. Texperium wants to change this. Texperium is a knowledge center that will bring together companies, knowledge institutes, and the government to work together towards the goals of recycling and high-value reuse of textiles. For example, discarded cabin personnel clothing from KLM will not be thrown into the incinerator after use, but reused in new textile products. Discarded window dressings, curtains or shades can be given a new life as wall covering.
Texperium has been giving special attention to the development of unique technology for recycling and product development used for the reuse of the fibers in discarded textile. Up until now, this is currently being done for reuse in thermal insulation products, but not for high-value textile products. Texperium and its partners are bringing sorters and re-users together in order to look for opportunities to develop an innovative sorting method based on color and content. In this way sorters can deliver exactly the right fibers necessary for the fabrication of a specific textile product. Not only does this lead to a more durable material, it also leads to more opportunities in the market.
Oost NV has assembled the consortium for Texperium and is giving the group guidance from within the Knowledge Park Twente, the Province of Overijssel, Innovation Platform Twente and the Region Twente. The new center in Haaksbergen is expected to result in an extra 85 jobs annually to companies in the region of Twente.
